Host club Stella Azzurra got off on the right foot at the Torneo Cittá di Roma by outlasting Alba Berlin 81-79 in their Group C opener. Alba rallied with a pair of last-minute triples before time ran out on the visitors. Stella, which played from ahead throughout the game, got 14 points from Gianni Delle Cave, whose late free throws proved to be the game-winning points. Simone Colonnelli and Bruno Ondo Mengue added 13 points each, while Riccardo Cervi pulled 9 rebounds. For Alba, Kevin Bright shined 20 points and 8 rebounds. Niels Giffey added 17 points and Konstantin Klein 12. Stella raced out to an 8-2 lead on Cervi's dunk and went up 14-4 on three-pointers by Colonnelli and Delle Cave. Bright and Friedrich Lotze rallied Alba to within 22-17 but Stella scored the first quarter's last points on a Giampola Ricci basket to lead by double-digits again, 27-17. Alba kept within striking distance during the second quarter, using better defense to lower the difference to single digits and getting as close as 41-36 before Delle Cave's free throws ended the half. The third quarter ran similarly, with Bright's scoring keeping Alba close, but Stella eventually re-opening its double-digit lead with a 7-0 run in which Stefano Rambaldi and Haukur Palsson provided the spark. Nonetheless, Klein and Malte Ziegenhagen teamed up for Alba to trim the lead to 66-60 after 30 minutes. Bright had the game's only baskets during almost 4 minutes of the final quarter as Alba got within 68-65, but Colonnelli and Palsson soon made it 76-66. Bright, Klein and Giffey rallied Alba again, setting up Brian Wenzel's double-shot of three-pointers in the final minute, but the second of those fell with just 2 seconds left, meaning that Delle Cave's free throws stood up for a two-point win by the hosts.
